Cornerstone Ranch residents have the privilege of playing on the McKinney Magic Special Olympics basketball team. At the end of February, the team drove to Lewisville to compete in their end-of-season tournament.
The weekend started off with a pep rally at Allen Bible Church. The enthusiastic crowd cheered as each player was announced and entered the room. After their grand entrance, the players took the microphone and addressed their fans. This annual tradition has brought energy and encouragement to our residents as they prepare to overcome their own limitations and play hard at their tournament. Experiencing the energy of their supporters does wonders for their nerves! Many of their fans from the pep rally continued their support by joining them in Lewisville for their games (over an hour drive away!).
The Magic had their first game on Friday night. The team played hard and kept the game close, but lost by 5 points in the final minutes. That night, resident Jason scored four points and resident David scored a career-high 20 points.
The tournament continued on Saturday with morning and afternoon games. The Magic took a break at noon and drove over to resident Laura’s childhood home to enjoy lunch with her family.
All in all, the weekend was an incredible opportunity to meet new friends, grow as a team, develop new skills, build self-confidence, and enjoy living a life of meaning and purpose. The team did well, too! Together they earned a bronze medal at the event.
